StudentProspector Tips and Tricks
Noelle Little is the manager of StudentProspector.com. She has been here for a long time and has learned what does and doesn't work, and she would like to share her knowledge with you, so that you can better recruit students with e-mail.
Therefore, here are the Top 12 things Noelle suggests recruiters do to increase interest and admissions through e-mail blasts:
- E-mails are not letters. Students don't want to read long prose, so keep the messages as short as possible.
- Have a distinct call to action.
- Direct the students to a trackable Web page or inquiry form that has something to do with the message. Do not just send them to your home page.
- Students aren't interested in hearing about the historical life of your college institution this early in the relationship. Tell them about the program(s) and then end the e-mail.
- Spread out ideas into smaller paragraphs with few sentences instead of clumping them into large paragraphs that look imposing in e-mail windows.
- Keep it personal. List a contact name so that the student knows for whom to ask when calling or e-mailing.
- Students are signing up for recruitment to a particular type of program, not your school specifically, so don't assume in your e-mail message that they are only interested in your university.
a. For example: Don't start the e-mail off with "Thank you for your interest in our university (or in our MBA program)…" - If there are any limiting requirements for a program, list them in the e-mail. Students want to know what you are expecting.
- Include some information about the program, but don't list every detail found in the Course Catalogue.
- What makes you different? Students like interesting tidbits that set your programs apart from those offered by similar schools.
- E-mails are sent out to relevant student profiles in HTML and text formats, depending on the relevant student's e-mail account.
- When students reply to your e-mail, you need to respond to their inquiries quickly and effectively. Students will see right past canned e-mails and be automatically turned off to your program. And if you take too long, they'll simply forget about you.
